10 Packing Tips That Actually Save You Time on Moving Day

August 17, 2026

Good packing isn't just about getting everything in boxes — it's about making moving day faster, safer, and less stressful for everyone involved. Here are 10 tips we consistently recommend to our customers.

1. Label Every Box With Room and Contents

Don't just write "kitchen" — write "kitchen: pots & pans" or "bedroom: winter clothes." This makes unpacking dramatically faster and helps movers know where each box goes without asking.

2. Use Uniform Box Sizes When Possible

Boxes of similar sizes stack more securely in the truck, which means better use of space and less shifting during transport.

3. Pack Heavy Items in Small Boxes

Books, tools, and other dense items should go in smaller boxes. A large box packed full of books becomes nearly impossible — and unsafe — to lift.

4. Fill Empty Space in Boxes

Gaps in boxes let items shift around during the move, increasing the chance of breakage. Use packing paper, towels, or clothing to fill empty space.

5. Wrap Fragile Items Individually

Dishes, glassware, and decor should each be wrapped individually, not just cushioned in a shared box. Stack plates vertically (like records) rather than flat — they're less likely to crack that way.

6. Keep an "Open First" Box

Pack a box (or two) with essentials you'll need immediately: phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, and any medications. Keep this box with you rather than loading it onto the truck.

7. Take Photos of Electronics Before Disconnecting

A quick photo of your TV/entertainment setup or computer cable arrangement makes reassembly at your new place much faster.

8. Use Wardrobe Boxes for Hanging Clothes

Wardrobe boxes let you move clothes directly from your closet without folding — a huge time saver, especially for larger closets.

9. Don't Overpack Boxes

It's tempting to cram as much as possible into one box, but overpacked boxes are more likely to break or become too heavy to carry safely.

10. Do a Final Sweep Before Sealing the Last Box

Check drawers, closet shelves, under furniture, and behind doors one more time before your movers arrive — it's easy to forget items in spots you don't normally think about.
